Congressional Quarterly's Politics in America 1996: The 104th Congress
Published in Hardcover by Congressional Quarterly Books (Sd) (September, 1995)
Authors: Philip D. Duncan, Christine C. Lawrence, Phil Duncan, and Cq Political
Average review score:

Brian Wayne Wells, Esquire, reviews "Politics in America"
An invaluable resource to the voting records, districts and biographies of each and every member of the United States House of Representatives and Senate, this book deserves a place on a shelf close at hand in the library of every researcher, lobbbyist or citizen who hopes to use the telephone or E-Mail to inform the appropriate members of concerns she/he may have about issues which come before Congress. Even though a new edition of the book comes out every two years in April of the odd-numbered years following the congressional elections, the old editions of the book are worth keeping as a resource and record of how a long-term member voted on an issue years before. In this way, the researcher reading this book can more accurately predict how a particular member is likely to vote on any issue currently before the Congress.

Conservatism in America
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Press Reprint (June, 1981)
Author: Clinton Lawrence Rossiter
Average review score:

The definitive treatise on American Conservativism.
Rossiter's little book is a must-have for any student of politcal thought and theory. Be forewarned, this is not a book for the weak-minded. Rossiter clearly defines Amercican Conservatism and explains why it supercedes today's liberal, weak-minded, damaging ideology. If you consider yourself a conservative, this is your new Bible. If you are another persuasion, plan on converting.

The Contentious Triangle: Church, State, and University: A Festschrift in Honor of Professor George Huntston Williams (Sixteenth Century Essays & Studies, Vol 51)
Published in Hardcover by Truman State University Press (April, 1999)
Authors: George Huntston Williams, Rodney Lawrence Petersen, and Calvin Augustine Pater
Average review score:

A Fitting Tribute
The Contentious Triangle is a tribute for Harvard Professor emeritus George Huntston Williams. Contrary to what Amazon.com lists in their entry for the volume, the editors are actually Rodney L. Petersen and Calvin Augustine Pater, and it is in honor of his 85th birthday, rather than his 90th. Both the scholarship and the contributors of this book are first rate. Contributors include Jaroslav Pelikan, Peter Gomes, J. Bryan Hehir, Edward Idris Cardinal Cassidy, Harold O.J. Brown, Heiko Oberman, and Demetrios Trakatellis, among others. This group of internationally repected church historians, church leaders, philosophers and theologians write on subjects that span the history of the church, in the spirit of Williams own overarching perspective of the discipline.

Sophisticated yet accessible
This is an accessible, sophisticated, and multi-faceted introduction to the law and economics of corporate finance. The book subtly and persuasively connects themes of corporate finance to themes of greater social policy.

Countercultural Christians: Exploring a Christian Worldview
Published in Paperback by Group Publishing (December, 2002)
Authors: Tracey D. Lawrence and Charles W. Colson
Average review score:

Great small group material
This was particularly helpful to our small group. We were tired of typical fill-in-the-blank Bible studies and we found the study to challenge us in all aspects of life. It caused us to really reflect on what keeps us from living out our Christian convictions.

The Country Kitchen (Great Lakes Books)
Published in Paperback by Wayne State Univ Pr (T) (November, 1992)
Authors: Della T. Lutes and Lawrence R. Dawson
Average review score:

Michigan's answer to MFK Fisher
Mildly intrigued by the title of this book, I bought a used copy...a flea market in Lunenberg, Mass. this past fall. It turned out to be a real gem. Superbly well-written, it weaves together accounts of the author's family life in rural Michigan at the turn of the Twentieth Century with recipes of the food the family ate. The effect is very much along the lines of MFK Fisher's books about her life in France. But unlike Mrs. Fisher, Ms. Lutes is no self-conscious bohemian. Very much a woman of her time and place, she is nonetheless independent, intelligent, and very funny. That is, there is nothing genteel and Victorian about her, and nothing pretentious. She is modern, one of us. Who was Della T. Lutes? Hard to tell at this late date. My 1965 edition of "The Reader's Encyclopedia" has no entry on her. Amazon.com has only this title for sale. But she must have had a considerable following in her day. My copy of "The Country Kitchen," printed in 1948, was apparently the 22nd printing of a book originally published in 1936. The flyleaf lists four other titles by her. I gave "The Country Kitchen" to my wife, a chef, for Christmas. She has yet to stop raving about it. More than a cook book, a culinary history or a social history, "The Country Kitchen" qualifies as capital-L Literature.

Courting Sarah (Friends Romance Series)
Published in Paperback by Jove Pubns (October, 1999)
Author: Deborah Lawrence
Average review score:

Great book!
... I must say that it ranks up there with some of my all-time favorites.

A strong, independent woman, disappointed by her previous marriage, Sarah moves to Oregon (1873) to live with her best friend Phoebe and to also begin a new life. There she writes advice columns for the town newspaper (one under her real name, and another under a pen name), and falls in love with a "Mr. Brown" (whom she's never met, and can't seem to find), who writes to her column every week. -- Of course, if you read the book, you'll know all along who this "Mr. Brown" is, and you'll be quite eager for Sarah to find out who the mystery man is. -- This is a cute book about friendship and romance, and you'll only wish it were longer when you finish!
